Vine Pruners Basket

A sectioned garden tools bucket, traditionally used by vine pruners.

According to legend, while St Martin was visiting a monastery, his donkey, tethered outside, helped himself to the monks’ delicious grape vines. Initially furious, the monks realised the next year that the chewed vines produced the best grapes. This was the beginning of vine pruning. The diligent vine pruner would use one of these ingenious buckets, with compartments for grapes, his tools, and possibly his lunch.

This French vine pruner’s bucket would make an excellent planter (and talking point), or you could use it as originally intended, as a useful garden tool carrier. Either way, it’s a delightful and charming item.

French, circa 1950s.
