A cast iron Victorian garden cloche with new glazing.
This English cloche, dating from around 1880, has recently been reglazed so is in superb condition. The cast iron still has its original paintwork, which wasn’t touched during the restoration.
“Cloche” comes from the French word for “bell”, as the first garden cloches were bell-shaped. This one has a square base and triangular top, another popular design. Used in the 19th century to protect plants from the cold, they are rarely used commercially these days, but definitely, have a place in the domestic garden.
This is a lovely example, and thanks to the reglazing, it could be used for its original purpose, and protect your delicate young plants this winter.
English circa 1880.
