Vintage Rhubarb Forcer

An unusually tall terracotta rhubarb forcer in good condition.

Rhubarb forcers are used to limit photosynthesis, which makes the plant grow earlier in the season. The forcer is placed over the rhubarb crowns in the winter or early spring, and when shoots start to appear, the lid is removed, forcing the plant to grow upwards towards the light.  The result is that luscious, tart fruit that forms the base of many favourite deserts.

The vintage rhubarb forcer can still be used for its original purpose of drawing up the rhubarb, or as an interesting and original decorative item.

English, 1950s.

Height: 66cm Circumference: 43cm at the base
