19th Century Vinegar Pot

A rare vinegar pot from Provence.

The pot is finished with a lovely lemon glaze, making it more attractive than many of these most utilitarian of vessels. However, it’s still clear what it was in its past life, as it has a small dispensing hole where the tap or cork would have been.

Vinegar was an essential preserving ingredient in those pre-refrigeration days, and every household would have had its store of vinegar. Today, this appealing antique vinegar pot would make a fabulous rustic planter.

French, 19th century.
