The Winged Messenger

A beautiful interpretation of Giambologna’s Mercury, with a wonderfully flowing sense of movement.

Giambologna is a 16th century Flemish sculptor, influenced by Italian Renaissance sculpture. He produced several versions of a flying Mercury, messenger of the Gods, which were celebrated for both their realism and elegant, classical lines.

This 1920s interpretation is marvellously realised, with a fantastic level of detail. The statue is cast in lead, with the caduceus (herald’s staff) in cast iron. Mercury stands on a natural stone plinth, also dating from circa 1920. A graceful addition to any garden.

English, circa 1920.
