Huge Greek Pithoi
This huge 19th-century Pithoi urns would have been used to transport olive oil, vegetables, meat, honey and seed.
They would originally have had a lid and were made using a potter's wheel mainly on the Greek Islands of Rhodes, Chios and Sifnos. The eyes at the top of the urn would have had ropes thread through then so they could be craned on to a ship. They were whitewashed to reflect the sun to help keep the contents cool./p>
This attractive urn would look fantastic as decorative item both inside an on the patio.
