Greek Pithoi Jar
These stunning white washed urns were used throughout Greece in the 19th century for storing or shipping wine, olive oil, cheese, honey and seeds.
They were made using a potter's’ wheel on Islands such as Rhodes, Chios and Sifnos and then bought by ships captains who distributed them around the eastern Mediterranean.
This medium sized example when filled would have been so heavy that they would have to be craned on and off ships using a harness strapped around the the three handles.
Pithoi urns make great statement pieces both inside the home and in the garden.
