Greek Tzare Urns

Price is per individual item

These fantastic looking Tzars urns were made in the Peloponnesus region of Greece in the villages around the town Koroni. They are also known as Koroni Pitharia urns.

They were handmade and built up level by level by about 5cm-10cm a day. The definitive ribs were added separately to provide additional strength. They were used to store olive oil and vegetables but the water content in the clay made them unsuitable for wine.

The bulbous shape maximised the storage capacity and indicates they we made in the mid to late 19th century.

We now have three of these in stock and everyone is slightly different in both size and shape and has its own individual patina and markings making each one totally original.
