Pair of Rhubarb Forcers
A pair of terracotta rhubarb forcers in excellent condition.
Rhubarb forcers are used to limit photosynthesis, thus making the plant grow earlier in the season. The forcer pot is placed over the rhubarb crowns in the winter, and when shoots start to appear, the lid is removed, forcing the plant to grown upwards towards the light. The result – that most English of fruits, the base of many of the nation’s favourite puddings.
Of course, you don’t need to be growing forced rhubarb to appreciate these pots and the elegant shape of vintage rhubarb forcers has made them a popular garden accessory.
